Do we really prefer our pets to our partners?

So, research  by Marks & Spencer Pet Insurance has found that 42% of people questioned prefer their dog or cat to their partner! What a sorry state of British romance and just before Valentine's Day!

42% would choose their pet if asked to choose between the canine companion or their partner and 63% would cancel a date if their pet was ill.

So next time you're stood up for a date, perhaps you should check whether the cat's sick or not before you read too much in to it!

It makes you think how relationships have evolved and that our need for a romantic partner may not be critical to our happiness any more. Do we prefer the simple companionship of an domesticated animal to the more complex and relationship with a fellow human being?

If so, why is that? Have we become too independent? Or too selfish? Are we too tired or lazy to put in the effort required in a relationship? Or are cats just much cuter?!

It gives a whole new meaning to "man or mouse"!
